Artist Statement
Originating from Havana, Cuba, my work explores the intricate landscapes of observation, perception, and imagination. My artistic journey unfolds through a distinctive visual vocabulary and a profound exploration of the painting process, where the conceptual transforms into the tangible.
My visuals evoke sensations similar to peering into a tranquil body of water, instilling an urge to dive beneath the surface—cultivating a captivating tension that feels suspended in time. At the core of my practice lies the pursuit of capturing the exact line or hue of a form as it emerges.
This dedication to translation began at the age of six, sitting on the balcony of my family’s second-floor apartment in Central Havana. After eagerly presenting a drawing of a car to my father and uncle, my uncle took the opportunity to teach me traditional drawing techniques, focusing on generalized shapes and simplified forms. That singular moment ignited a lifelong dedication to creating art that is both genuine and significant. This quiet determination to honor the essence of perception has profoundly shaped my artistic decisions and methods ever since. Now based in Philadelphia, I continue to work from direct observation to explore and express the complexities of life.
