Flag Series: Back in Cuba and USA flag 1998-2026

The Back in Cuba series stems from an experience as a child in Havana, Cuba, when I was 8 years old. My mother made a daring statement by draping our large leather couch with the U.S. flag, an act that was illegal and could have led to her arrest. This bold gesture represented her beliefs and her dissent against Fidel Castro’s regime. Word spread quickly in the neighborhood about Carmen’s flag, attracting curious visitors eager to witness this act of defiance. Although I didn’t understand their discussions, the excitement and amazement on their faces left a lasting impression on me. My mother’s bravery in standing up for what she believed in has profoundly influenced my life.

I draped the USA flag over a couch or loveseat; the image is central, both intimate and surreal.
